Lethal Weapon has been granted a season 3 by FOX, but, it features Seann William Scott in a joint-lead opposite Daymon Wayans. Lethal Weapon has a mighty legend in Hollywood, starting with the successful 1987 movie featuring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover as the detectives Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh respectively. Helmed by Richard Donner, the movie’s success created an extremely profitable franchise which saw four movies in an 11-year span, adding actors like Rene Russo, Joe Pesci, and Chris rock alongside.
Even though Donner and the movie’s leading actors enjoyed that success together, the franchise went on hibernation after the release of Lethal Weapon IV in 1998, until FOX resurrected the franchise as a crime comedy TV show in 2016. True to the spirit of the movies, the reckless Riggs and thoughtful Murtaugh returned, but, the characters were played by Clayne Crawford and Wayans, and the series had a two-season run before the season 3’s prospects were left in the air due to the uncertainty with Crawford. However, now it appears as if FOX has sorted things out.
FOX has now given the renewal for Lethal Weapon Season 3, but, Seann William Scott has taken over from Clayne Crawford as the joint lead after Crawford was fired last week. Scott is going to appear as a new character in the series who will partner Murtaugh. However, The Hollywood Reporter quotes its sources as having informed that Scott might play the role of Martin Riggs’ brother to keep the Riggs’ name going.
The news has come out a couple of weeks after the reports about Crawford’s repeated reprimanding due to his erratic behavior on set. The production studio didn’t divulge any details about their parting with Crawford, but, only stated on Sunday: “Warner Bros. Television has decided not to renew Clayne Crawford’s contract for ‘Lethal Weapon.'” Crawford had earlier mentioned the problem on his Instagram account, saying there had been on-set problems “over working conditions that did not feel safe or conducive to good work under the leadership of a guest director and assistant director.” The actor also revealed that he had spoken to Human Resources and undergone “studio-appointed” therapy.
This news is likely to disappoint his fans, but, it is undeniable that he has been replaced by a mighty comedy actor. Scott was great in the American Pie series, and he also managed to generate a fan following as the lead actor of the indie sports comedies such as Goon and Goon: Last of the Enforcers. Scott has never found it difficult to dominate the screen with his performance. We do not doubt that he will effortlessly slide into his character of the series’ joint lead opposite Wayans. Audiences will be the eventual authority to decide when Lethal Weapon Season 3 comes back. As far as Crawford is concerned, it would be of interest to see how his career progresses after he has lost his role in a successful series. No doubt that is a major blow for any actor.
There is no premiere date announced for Lethal Weapon Season 3 yet.
