It seems like WB has finalized the Cheetah for Wonder Woman 2 because the studio is reported to be talking to Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live) for the role of the villain. After Man of Steel became the first film from the DC Films, WB had a proper launch of their shared superhero universe with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. However, it was the less than encouraging the performance of Batman v Superman, Suicide Squad, and Justice League that created a lot of disruptions to their plans. The only well-acclaimed box office success for the franchise happened to be last summer’s Patty Jenkins helmed Wonder Woman.
Featuring Gal Gadot as Diana Prince from a mythical island called Themyscira, Wonder Woman impressed both critics and moviegoers and went on to become a major box office hit. Therefore, it was not even a surprise when Warner Bros revealed their plans to make Wonder Woman 2 at San Diego Comic Con last year. The film is scheduled to release next year, and the pre-production is reaching its final stages. Therefore, the studio is searching for a new villain to challenge the Amazonian Goddess.
According to Deadline, Warner Bros. has been talking to comedy actress Kristen Wiig to play Cheetah in the sequel to Wonder Woman. It was revealed sometime back that Cheetah is going to be the villain in Wonder Woman 2, and further details revealed that the film would be based in the Cold War era of the 1980s. Other than knowing that Wiig is being considered to play Cheetah, no further details have been shared. Variety’s Justin Kroll said that Emma Stone was first approached to play Cheetah, but, once she declined, Jenkins narrowed down on Wiig.
Wiig has become quite a star as one of the most talented funny ladies in Hollywood courtesy her run on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, although she also received a lot of critical appreciation with Bridesmaids, which was co-written and starred by her. Wiig has been a part of dramatic stuff too, such as Girl Most Likely, The Skeleton Twins, and The Martian. But, she is not renowned for action roles, barring the 2016 movie Ghostbusters. Therefore, it would be quite challenging for her to play Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2, and we are sure she is talented enough to manage it well.
Coming back to Wonder Woman 2, Gadot and Jenkins have teamed up again for the movie, and Jenkins would play a bigger role this time by directing and also co-writing the movie’s script with Geoff Johns. We also expect Chris Pine to make a comeback, but, it is unclear as to how they will revive him since he died in the original movie. There are some theories doing rounds about how Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) can return to Wonder Woman. The other Wonder Woman actors Said Taghmaoui, and Ewen Bremner are also expected to reprise their characters in the sequel, but, there is the question of how they will manage the huge time leap between the two films.
Scheduled to release in November next year, Wonder Woman 2 will start filming in summer. Therefore, as we inch closer to the official production commencement, we are bound to find out more details about the sequel. We will keep you updated whenever new details emerge about Wonder Woman 2, such as the confirmation of Wiig playing Cheetah.
