‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Directors Explain The Reason Behind The Surprise Character’s Comeback

Warning: This article has massive Avengers: Infinity War spoilers!

As revealed in a crucial Avengers: Infinity War sequence, the Soul Stone was away on Vormir, a planet based in the Helgentar System, which in itself turns out to be a major Easter Egg. Upon their arrival on Vormir, Thanos and Gamora discover that the Red Skull is guarding the Soul Stone. The Red Skull was transported this faraway planet by the power of the Tesseract, at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. It is not yet clear why was he serving as the protector of the Soul Stone, guiding any seekers looking for it, to clear the test of sacrifice.

Those Marvel fans who spent years wondering about the fate of Red Skull are now able to find out more courtesy the Avengers: Infinity War directors, Joe and Anthony Russo. They were recently talking to Uproxxand detailed why Red Skull was selected to be the guardian of the Soul Stone.

“Joe Russo: Somebody had to be the gatekeeper to the Soul Stone, and somebody had to distribute the rules to Thanos and Gamora.

Anthony Russo: In a way that was credible and believable.

Joe Russo: Who felt credible to the audience. And a character who has been trapped – the Red Skull has been turned into this wraith who now guards the Soul Stone and distributes the rules to whoever shows up there trying to obtain it. It felt like there was more credibility than just a random character.

Anthony Russo: Somebody who has a history with the stones may seem like they have a little more authority in terms of their experience – especially a tragic experience.”

The Brothers also answered another major questions that the fans had been grappling with – who was the guy playing the role of Red Skull? It was revealed that Ross Marquand (The Walking Dead) had replaced the First Avenger actor Hugo Weaving, and the directors revealed the reason behind the change, mentioning Weaving’s earlier statements about being over with Marvel. And as far as Marquand’s selection for the role is concerned, this is what the Russo brothers said:

Joe Russo:” Well, Ross Marquand did an incredible job of capturing not only the essence of his voice but the essence of the performance – a haunted figure who is now this imprisoned spirit.”

Anthony Russo: “And it’s a specific style of acting. Like, Josh Brolin couldn’t have been more thrilled by the opportunity of working in this very strange way. He remarked to Joe and me that he felt like he was in acting school again because this was all experimental and new. And some people are comfortable with that, and some people aren’t.”

It is not known as to what happened to Red Skull. He was on Vormir to guard the Soul Stone, but, now that the Stone has been taken by Thanos, it is apparent that his mission is over. Red Skull has been relieved from his duties and confinement. Looking at how the cosmic forces are now strong enough to kill Herr Schmidt, we won’t be shocked to see him again in MCU Phase 4.

Marvel’s Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War are presently running in theaters, and up next is Ant-Man and The Wasp on July 6, 2018, Captain Marvel on March 8, 2019, Avengers 4 on May 3, 2019, Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel on July 5, 2019, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2020.
