Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War follow. Major spoilers!
Since the Power Stone was kept safe on Xandar after the original Guardians of the Galaxy film, it was surprising to see Thanos appear with the purple stone studded in his Infinity Gauntlet at the starting of Avengers: Infinity War. Although it is mentioned that he destroyed Xandar to capture the stone, the destruction is not shown in the movie, and that was a major creative decision taken behind the scenes.
The Russo Brothers who made the movie were asked why they chose to overlook those moments during a discussion with a group of high school students. “Because we thought it’d be one too many,” Joe Russo said. “There’s so many stones he has to collect, and you get into a trap, and we thought — we knew where it was in [Guardians of the Galaxy], so it was easy to deal with it off screen.”
Despite the scene not being a key moment in Avengers: Infinity War, it is a part of the origin story of the character of Nova. Kevin Feige had recently commented about the cosmic character, and the destruction of Xandar might be revealed in some other future MCU film.
“Nova is… if we have a big board with a bunch of characters that have more immediate potential, Nova is on that board,”Feige had told ComicBook.com “Because of the connection to the Guardians universe because there are more than one examples to pull from in the comics that are interesting. And you’re absolutely right; he was in the earliest drafts of the [Guardians of the Galaxy].”
You can check Avengers: Infinity War in theaters now, and the upcoming MCU movies include Ant-Man and the Wasp releasing on July 6, Captain Marvel on March 8, next ear, Avengers 4 on May 3, next year.
