Joe and Anthony Russo have claimed that Thor’s love interest Jane Foster might return to the MCU. Jane Foster played by Natalie Portman first appeared in 2011’s Thor. Jane Foster is the eccentric physicist whom Thor fell in love with in the movie. Jane Foster appeared again in Thor: The Dark World and she was infected by the mysterious Aether liquid (the Reality Stone in liquid form) and was thus the object of the entire The Dark World movie.
In Thor: Ragnarok, Thor revealed that Jane and he had broken up amicably. She does not appear in Infinity War, but the Russo Brothers have hinted at something else entirely. The future of the MCU includes many more appearances by Natalie Portman as Jane Foster.
Natalie Portman was originally not supposed to leave the MCU just when it was about to hit its golden years. In fact, she was about to get more involved with the MCU after Thor: The Dark World, but off-screen, there were rumours of a lot of creative differences between Marvel’s creative committee and Natalie Portman, who was unhappy with the way her character was portrayed on screen.
Kevin Feige has taken over now with new board members overseeing the MCU. So there is a chance Portman could be returning to the MCU considering the Marvel leadership is new and fresh.
When asked several questions about the characters that may or may not have survived Thanos’ snap at the end of Infinity War, the Russo Brothers were cryptic in their replies. They did not want to reveal too much and ruin Marvel’s projects in the pipeline.
While the Russo Brothers did not explicitly claim that Foster was dead, they refused to reply whether Portman’s future within the MCU is over. That means Jane Foster might have some future within the MCU. Maybe not in Avengers 4 but in the future Marvel projects right after Phase 4.
Jane Foster is one of Earth’s foremost experts in astrophysics. She also happens to be an expert in dimensional physics and astrology. She could be the Avengers’ best chance of defeating Thanos given her knowledge about alien civilizations like the Asgardians and Dark Elves.
The comics have always shown Jane Foster in the brightest light. She becomes the God of Thunder after Thor is deemed unworthy of wielding the hammer. Foster died saving Asgard from Mangog but Odin and Thor managed to bring her back from the dead. Compared to her comic book version, the MCU portrays her as a damsel in distress. But if a skilled writer is given some creative freedom, maybe Foster’s role in the MCU could be widened to include a larger scope. Maybe she will end up becoming the new God of Thunder after Chris Hemsworth leaves the MCU.
Avengers: Infinity War is currently running in cinemas everywhere. The official film synopsis reads:
