Born on February 1, 1987, Ronda Rousey is an American martial arts expert who helped introduce female MMA to the mainstream American audience and also was the first UFC women’s champion.

She was born in Riverside, California. At the time of her birth, her umbilical cord was wrapped around her neck and this nearly killed her apart from causing minor brain damage which rendered her incapable of speaking coherently until the age of six.

Rousey’s father Ron broke his back after a fall while sledding with his daughters. After he realized that he was going to be a paraplegic and later quadriplegic with no more than a few years to live, he committed suicide when Rousey was eight.

Rousey was homeschooled for parts of elementary and high school, but, she found a vent for her frustration when she started learning judo. Her mother was a gold medal winning judoka in the 1984 World Championships and she educated her daughter of the sport’s basics included the deadly armbar that she used to pin a rival to the mat. Rousey became a member of the US Olympic team when she was 15 and at the age of 16, she became the youngest American to reach number one rank in the wome’s half-middleweight division. Despite not winning a medal at the 2004 Olympics, Rousey won gold at the World Junior and Pan American Judo Championships in the same year.

Rousey became a judo champion and won back to back golds at the Pan American Championships and also a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics. Rousey joined the MMA circuit in 2010 and became famous as the UFC Bantamweight Champion. In January 2018, she declared that she was moving to the WWE Pro Wrestling circuit.

In August 2017, she married UFC fighter Travis Browne in Hawaii.
