Even before the Rian Johnson-helmed Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit the theaters, it was declared that he was once again going to team up with Lucasfilm on a new Star Wars trilogy. Johnson is expected to depict a story separate from the Skywalker saga, and the narrative is currently being worked upon. While there are no details available as of now, but, the producing partner of Johnson, Ram Bergman feels that the first film of the new trilogy might be out as early as in the next two years itself.
The new Star Wars trilogy by Rian Johnson came up with an idea of a Star Wars trilogy unrelated to anything that we have seen so far. Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy was quite excited to approve this project, and the director/writer is now working on the details of the fresh story. However, these are very early days for this project, and there are likely to be a number of Star Wars projects releasing in the years ahead, so two years might be a bit too early. In response to a question about his involvement with this trilogy and a potential release timeline, Ram Bergman said:
“I can’t tell you because we don’t know yet. Maybe in two years; it’s just in the early stages.”
Rian Johnson has previously talked about his intention to create a whole new story before progressing with his Star Wars trilogy, which is probably what he is working on right now. No matter what his initial plan was, it was good enough to make Lucasfilm excited, despite the backlash received by The Last Jedi. Although the first Star Wars film by Johnson caused fans to get divided, it was nothing like the earlier films. It took liberties, and we expect the new trilogy to do the same.
Production will soon start on Star Wars 9 under the director J.J. Abrams who has replaced Colin Trevorrow. The film will release in December 2019, and we don’t think that Disney and Lucasfilm will be keen to again release Star Wars films as close together as happened with The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story, especially now that the latter failed at the box office. However, it is not ruled out that the new trilogy by Rian Johnson might get going in late 2020 if everything goes well.
Apart from Star Wars 9, there are the recently announced Boba Fett film and the Obi-Wan film also in development. Then there is the TV series by Jon Favreau based between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens as well as a mystery trilogy being developed by the makers of Game of Thrones, D.B. Weiss, and David Benioff. That means we have a great deal of Star Wars in the works, and it remains to be seen how Lucasfilm and Disney space out all these projects in a way that fans don’t get sick of overdose.
